Obituary

Vernon Township; Our beloved, husband, father, grandfather, and friend Charles Francis Stone Jr., 85, passed away on Saturday February 1, 2020. Charles was born in Brooklyn, NY on December 30, 1934 to Charles F. Stone Sr. And Mabel (Ehly). He moved to Vernon in 1968, so he could raise his family in the peacefulness and beauty of the country.

Charles enlisted in the United States Army in 1952 at the tender age of 17 and was a Korean War Veteran- receiving several medals of honor. He was a member of the Drywall, Tapers, and Finishers Union Local 1976 in Springfield, NJ until his retirement. He was the union’s first elected president, serving for several years.

Charles was an avid photographer and Skier. He enjoyed the beauty of nature and being in the outdoors, as can be seen through many of the family photo albums. He taught each of his children and grandchildren to ski, whether it was on the slopes of Vernon, Vermont, or Lake Tahoe.

In 1956, Charles married the love of his life, Evelyn, who loved him unconditionally. Together, they raised four children and six grandchildren. Charles was an amazing husband, father and grandfather. He has been our family’s rock in every way possible. It was always his girls and grandchildren he put first. He loved without exception, and never expected anything in return. He was at every single sporting event, concert, or recital, always cheering us on. His grandchildren will always remember him as their “Poppy” – the person that genuinely believed his grandkids were something extra special. His generosity, love and humor were endless, and his legacy will never be forgotten.

Charles was predeceased by his parents and his young son, Michael, who he absolutely adored.

Charles is survived by his loving wife, Evelyn (Schafer) Stone of Vernon, his three daughters, Maryann Stone-Blenis of Vernon, Catherine Stone of Vernon, Michelle Stone-Van Tassel and her husband Mark of Vernon, and son-in-law Douglas Borkowski. He is, and will always be the poppy of Shannon, Brandon, Talia Jean, Carlie, Sidney, and Yan Jolie. In addition, he will be missed by his beloved puppy Jersey, and kitty Max.

Relatives and friends will be received on Friday February 7th from 2-6PM with services at 6PM at the Ferguson-Vernon Funeral Home 241 Rt. 94, Vernon, NJ (GPS use 1 Vanderhoof Court). In lieu of flowers donations to Vernon Animal Shelter 3 Riggs Way, Vernon, NJ 07462 or Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice 99 Sparta Ave., Newton, NJ 07860 would be appreciated. It is never easy to let go of the ones you love so much, especially when they are so kind and caring as Mr. Stone was. Yet, what a blessing to have had such a loving husband, father, friend and more, in your lives for so long. May the years of wonderful memories of him comfort you in your time of sadness. I hope that amidst your tears you can find a measure of hope and comfort in God's promises which He extends to all. John 5:28,29; Revelation 21:4, Psalms 37:29 My condolences to family and friends.

Dearest Rin, I didn't really know Charles, but his power in your life made me believe he was similar to my own Daddy, Jim. When the soreness of the fact that he is no longer visible subsides, you will all know that he is still with you, even in you. He had a specific and different relationship with every one of the primary ones - Evelyn, Maryann, Catherine, and Michelle. In different ways, each one of you experienced him as a supplier of love. The memory of him will supply that same love now, or cause you to attract Charles everywhere.
My Daddy loved to laugh and cry, and when he was dying, he said to me, "As long as you can laugh and cry, I will never be dead for you."
So how will Charles live on for YOU? What did he give that you loved? Be in a state of expectation for that very thing in your remaining days, and watch how it shows up, unexpectedly, for you.
This is in addition to your personal faith about where he is now. One sure fact, that will more peace by the minute, is that he is free from all pain. Who can boast that?
Wishing you the state of no pain, as much as possible, for your own remaining days alive in earth. Love, Sadie Girl McHugh
