Obituary

Howard S. Porter, age 95 of Vernon, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 3rd, 2021 at the Westwind Manor in Franklin.
Born in Hackensack to the late Sherman F. and Marie (Hein) Porter, Howard was a proud US Navy Veteran of World War II. Howard previously lived in Waldwick, before settling in Vernon in 1978.
A self-employed carpenter, Howard enjoyed deep sea fishing, spending time with his family, and he loved dogs. One of Howard’s proudest days was when he was part of the Honor Flight for WWII Veterans from Newburgh, NY to Washington, DC in April, 2014. The trip brought the veterans to their memorial to thank them for their service. His family accompanied him and shared this very special day with him.
Predeceased by his wife, Patricia Porter in 2006 and daughter, Joanne M. Porter in 1979, Howard is survived by his children, Eileen Gardner and husband Gary of Vernon, James H. Porter of Boynton Beach, FL, and Michael J. Porter and wife Michelle of Vernon; seven grandchildren, Gary Gardner, Jr., Holly Terrill and husband Bill, Kristie Lyons and husband Elliot, Danielle Hardgrove and husband Rob, Derek Porter, Ashley Nunez and husband Carlos, and Daniel Porter; as well as four great-grandchildren, Kailey, Collin, Billy, and Caleb; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation for Howard will be on Sunday, March 7th, 2021 from 12-4PM at the Ferguson—Vernon Funeral Home, 241 Route 94 (One Vanderhoof Court for GPS), Vernon, NJ 07462. A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 8th, 10AM at the funeral home. Burial in the Northern New Jersey Veterans Memorial Cemetery will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project www.woundedwarriorproject.org

I am so sorry to hear about Howard's passing. He was always such a pleasant and friendly guy, as well as a nice neighbor. I used to see him occasionally at the Vernon Municipal building, and he always took time for a brief chat. He also had a funny sense of humor. Rest in peace, Howard. You will never be forgotten. -Adam Boltz

Dear Porter Family,
I had the honor of meeting Howard many times, while my father too, was a resident of Westwind Manor. I looked forward to chatting with him in the dining room during dinner. He was always kind and had the most amazing stories to tell. Rest in the sweetest peace, Howard. My sincere condolences to his family.
