Obituary for Virgil Robert Rome Sr.

Newton: Virgil Robert Rome Sr. passed away on Friday May 14, 2021 at Newton Medical Center, Newton NJ. Virgil was born on August 17, 1930 in Wantage Township to Henry and Serena (Post) Rome. Virgil was a long time resident of Sussex and Vero Beach, FL, Sandyston Township and most recently resided at the Barnhill Care Center where he lived happily keeping everyone entertained with his beautiful singing voice.

Virgil had been employed for 34 years as a tractor trailer driver for the Plastoid Corporation in Hamburg, NJ. Virgil attended Wantage Schools. He was a member of the Sussex United Methodist Church. He served in the US Army for two years and several more in the reserves. He was stationed at Fort Sill, OK where he was in charge of loading the state of the art "Honest John" rocket. He was the recipient of the Good Conduct medal. He loved to sing to whomever would listen, he loved to play baseball and play basketball with his children. He rode his bicycle up to the age of 88 and is well known among his family for his skills at sitting on the bike handlebars and riding backwards, walking on his stilts and for his horseshoe skills.

Virgil was predeceased by his wife Lillian (Cortright) Rome, brothers Ralph, Roy and Ronald; sisters Carolyn Williams and Marilyn Kilmer; half brothers Hobart, Clarence, Henry, Lester, Grant, and John Rome, John, Charles, Clyde and Calvin Card; half sisters Amanda Rome, Lucretia Willis, Eliza Rush, Edith McConnell, Blanche Hey and Olive Arnott; Gladys Houghtaling, Goldie Mathews Hockenberry, Ella Tartar and Abby VanderVelde.

Virgil is survived by his children Cheryl Raperto and husband James; Virgil Jr. and wife Cindy; David and wife Julie; his granddaughters Amanda Mack and husband Robert; Ashley Delea-Clark and husband Brian; and Meredith Rome; great-grandchildren Kassidy House; Carlynn Cronen, Colin Cronen, Rylee Murdter, Allison Frato, Jordyn Mack and Hayden Mack.
