Obituary for Edward Wynne

Stockholm, NJ: Edward “Ed” Wynne, 75 years old, passed away unexpectedly at Yale New Haven Hospital in New Haven, CT on Sunday, December 26, 2021. Born to James and Kathleen Wynne in the Bronx, NY, Ed lived with his family in Stockholm NJ for more than 40 years.

Ed worked as a Fire Safety Inspector for MSO Corporation prior to his retirement in January, 2021. However, Ed’s passion was his job as the head swim coach for the Pope John High School boys and girls swim teams. Ed coached alongside his best friend, Rich Carlson, for 34 years, retiring after the 2017-18 season. After Ed's wife, Geraldine, died in September 2018, he returned to the pool deck as an assistant coach. Under Ed’s leadership, Pope John earned 15 of the last 17 Sussex County championships, won two sectional crowns and the 1995 NJSIAA Non-Public B title, the only Sussex County school to win a state swimming championship. Ed was named the National Federation of State High School Associations Sectional Boys Coach of the Year in 1997, and was inducted into the Sussex County Sports Hall of Fame in 2007, and the New Jersey Scholastic Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2014. “Coachie” or “Coach Ed” as he was fondly known loved the sport and his swimmers. He was that one of a kind coach who always took time to tell his kids what a good job that they did and encouraged them to do their best and good things would happen.

Ed was predeceased by his wife, Geraldine Wynne, a brother, James Wynne and 2 sisters, Bernadette Widholm and Kathleen Owermohle. He was the devoted father of Brian Wynne and his wife, Lisa, of Orange, CT and Lauren Bickel and her husband, Chris, of Reno, NV. Pop Pop adored his 5 grandsons, Hunter, Brent, Hayden, Brady & Brennan, and loved nothing more than watching them play soccer and baseball.
