Obituary for Joan F. Raebel

Joan F. Raebel, age 90 of Highland Lakes, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 25th, 2022, at the CareOne at Hanover in Hanover Township, NJ.

Born in the Bronx to the late James Morris and Josephine (Mehringer) Patterson, Joan lived most of her life in Oakland, NJ, before settling in Highland Lakes eighteen years ago.

Joan was the former owner and operator of Big Dipper Ice Cream, her mobile ice cream truck business in Oakland. She and her late husband Jack spread the joy of Christmas as Santa and Mrs. Santa Claus. In recent years she continued to bring joy as Mrs. Santa Claus during the holidays. A passionate Christian, Joan was a member of the Faith with Love Fellowship Church in McAfee. She also loved reading the Bible and spreading the Christian faith. Joan enjoyed writing in her journal and spending time with friends, even talking to them on the phone when she was unable to see them in person. She was a member of the Vernon Township Senior Citizens.

Predeceased by her husband, Jack Raebel, and brother, Walter Patterson, Joan is survived by her three daughters, Joan and her husband Kevin Shinn, of Highland Lakes, Linda Raebel and her partner Rory Merkel of Hewitt, and Lisa and her husband Eric Medhus of Delaware; grandchildren Jason Shinn and his partner Kasey Odell, Kristin Sandau and her husband Shawn. Christopher Shinn and his wife Jessica. Jill DeLorenzo and her husband Jason. Luke Medhus and his wife Olivia; as well as eight cherished great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings, Evelyn Weber of Kinnelon, NJ, Connie Papa of Albany, NY, Donald Patterson of TX, and Linda Lattanzio of Taveres, FL; and many loving nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Joan's Life will be held on Saturday, April 9th, 2022, 11AM at the Acquaviva Restaurant on 23 in Hamburg.
