Obituary for Michael E. Lucas

Michael E. Lucas, age 86, passed away peacefully on March 9, 2022, at Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice in Fredon, NJ

Born in Garfield, NJ to the late Joseph and Mary (Buday), Michael lived in Rutherford before settling in Ogdensburg in 1972. He attended High School at St. Mary’s in Rutherford and was a graduate of Farleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck. Michael worked as a sales manager in the industrial supply field over a career of many years retiring in 2001.

During his youth, Michael was a member of the Holy Name Cadets and Hawthorne Caballeros Drum and Bugle Corps, where they were 7 time National Champions. He also umpired baseball and refereed basketball for many years.

Michael served on the Ogdensburg School Board from 1975 - 1987, six of those years as President. He was chairman of the Ogdensburg Bicentennial festival, a 3 day celebration of our nation’s birth, and also chaired several Ogdensburg Day celebrations. He brought his love of marching bands and parades to the great celebrations in Ogdensburg in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Michael was also an honorary member of the Ogdensburg Fire Department.

In 1987, Michael was a member of the Pope John XXIII High School expansion program and was the auction floor chairman for several years. He loved opera, was a passionate fan of the New York Giants, where he was a season ticket holder, and an avid reader of The NY Times.

Michael was predeceased by his beloved wife Helen (Gallahue) in 2014, his brothers George and Joseph and sister Marie Watterston. He was the devoted father of Laura Sanderson and her husband, Steven, of Succasunna, Joseph Lucas and his wife, Marci, of Saratoga Springs, NY, Lisa Lucas and her husband Ken of Sheffield, MA and Ginny Lucas and her husband Chris of Flemington. He was the loving grandfather of Ryan, Brendan, John, Daniel, Kyra, Aron and Destin and great-grandfather of Nevaeh; and dear brother of Barbara Filippelli of North Haledon. He also was cherished by several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive their friends at F. John Ramsey Funeral Home, One Main St., Franklin from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 13th. Prayer service at the funeral home at 5pm. A graveside service will be held on Monday, March 14th at 10:30 a.m. at St. Thomas of Aquin R.C. Church Cemetery, 53 Kennedy Avenue, Ogdensburg.
