Obituary for Colleen Hopkins (McCauley)

Colleen McCauley Hopkins, 89, succumbed quietly at the home of her son in Sparta New Jersey on June 25, 2022. Colleen was born in Columbus, Ohio, the daughter of Roy F. and Alice (Evans) McCauley. She was married to Stephen J Hopkins, her high-school sweetheart, for 68 years until his passing in July 2020. During their married life they enjoyed living in many places: Los Angeles, CA; Columbus and Cleveland, Ohio; Schenectady and Glens Falls, New York; Owensboro, Kentucky; Oradell and Demarest, New Jersey; and Indianapolis, Indiana.

She and Steve graduated from a class of only 16 from Jeromesville High School in 1951. They moved several times after Steve joined General Electric (G.E.) making friends wherever they lived. Colleen was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved gardening and created lovely flower beds at her each of her homes. She also loved sewing, cooking, and entertaining. She and Steve traveled extensively throughout their married life. Some of her favorite times were during travels to friends and families’ homes and with family visiting them. She was a supporter of the arts: attending and contributing to organizations like the Eiteljorg Museum. She thoroughly enjoyed attending Pops concerts at the Indianapolis Symphony and Carnegie Hall in NYC.

Colleen worked as a bookkeeper and administrative assistant for several businesses and then in New Jersey and Indiana for Stephen Hopkins Associates.

Colleen is survived by daughter Gwen and her husband Michael Hagemeyer of Brazil, IN; son Douglas and wife Angela of Sparta, NJ; son Michael of Pocatello, ID; and four grandchildren: Stephen (and wife Nicole) Hagemeyer of Indianapolis, IN; Jamie Hagemeyer of Belleville, IL; Calvin Hopkins of Seattle, WA; and Clayton Hopkins of Hoboken, NJ. She is also survived by sibling Eileen McCauley Mankin as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Colleen was preceded in death by her spouse Stephen, parents Roy and Alice McCauley, son Timothy Patrick Hopkins, and brothers Edmond (Eddie) and Dennis and sister Cathleen.

An announcement will be made in the future inviting relatives and friends to a Memorial Gravesite Service when her ashes are interred at the family gravesite in Savannah Ohio.
