Daniel Borstad, age 92 of McAfee, passed away on Monday,
December 3, 2018 at the Karen Ann Quinlan Home for Hospice.
Born in Arendal, Norway to the late Karl and Aagothe Iversen
Borstad, Daniel and his bride, Margaret (Lindstrom) Borstad,
boarded a ship for Canada in 1952 with dreams of America in their
plans. Sponsorship to the United States allowed them to immigrate
in 1957, eventually settling in McAfee in 1963. Naturalization
followed on the Courthouse steps in Newton in 1967.
Daniel was proud of being American and was very active in local
politics. Among many activities he was: chairman and member of
the Vernon Planning Board for many years, a Vernon Democratic
Committeeman and member of Vernon Democratic Club, former
member of Vernon Township Economic Development Committee,
Vernon Deputy Mayor in 1992, member and one of the founders of
the Vernon Citizens for Change in 2010 and 2011, and served on the
Board of Education of Sussex County Technical School for nearly a
decade in the late 1970’s.
Daniel was a Master Mason and charter member of the Vernon
Rotary Club, supporting many local organizations and causes,
including as a lifetime honorary member of the McAfee Volunteer
As a general contractor, Daniel co-owned D & M Borstad Company
with wife Margaret. A builder and custom cabinet maker, he was
most proud of his part in the construction of the Playboy Club Hotel
and the Great Gorge Village Condominiums.
Daniel as a teenager took part in the Norwegian resistance during
the Nazi Occupation of Norway from June 1940 to May 1945. After
completing his education with a Bachelor Degree in Agriculture, he
served in the Norwegian Army Reserves until 1952. An avid skier
from age 3 and a competitive ski jumper in his teens and early
twenties, a part of the Norwegian Army Ski Patrol, teaching ski
lessons the first few seasons of Great Gorge Ski Resort’s opening;
Daniel and Margaret continued to enjoy skiing in North American
and European resorts each winter and locally until 2017.
Predeceased by his son, Sigmund Borstad, Daniel is survived by his
loving wife, Margaret Borstad of McAfee, NJ; daughter Mary-Ann
Borstad of New Smyrna Beach, FL; granddaughters Melanie Garner
of Philadelphia, PA, Kara Joustra of Gainesville, FL, and Molly
Jeffcoat of Newberry, FL; as well as three great-grandchildren.
A memorial visitation for Daniel will be held on Saturday,
December 8, 2018 from 10am to 12 Noon at the Ferguson-Vernon
Funeral Home, 241 Route 94, Vernon, NJ 07462. In lieu of flowers,
memorial donations may be made to the Karen Ann Quinlan
Hospice Foundation, 99 Sparta Avenue, Newton, NJ 07860. Online
